Depart from your home area in the morning travelling to Cumbria and arrive in time for dinner at Cumbria Grand Hotel.

DAY TWO

Today we travel to Penrith

It was in the 9th and 10th centuries that the town became the capital of Cumbria – a semi-dependent state which, until 1070 AD formed part of the Kingdom of Scotland and Strathclyde. The two oldest streets, Burrowgate and Sandgate, date from the 13th Century.

Penrith was granted a market charter in 1223 by Henry III. In 1854 the market rights were leased by the Board of Health until they were eventually bought outright in 1878 for £4140. Today Eden District Council holds the rights to the market, ensuring that they are well populated with sellers and that they are promoted and publicised to the public.

Traditionally farmers brought their produce into Penrith on a horse and cart, the need for stabling explains the many alleyways which lead from the front of inns to the stables behind. Today these alley ways are very much in use and lead to a variety of delightful courtyard spaces, where you can find delightful restaurants and specialist shops.

In the afternoon we travel north again to the Cumbrian market town of Kendal, home of the famous ‘mint cake’ a glucose-based confectionery reputedly discovered accidentally by Joseph Wiper during a search for a clear glacier mint. We have free time to explore before returning to the hotel in time for dinner.

A packed lunch is included today.

DAY THREE

This morning WE VISIT LANCASTER Find a castle that was home to Kings and criminals, Walk down cobbled streets and through city squares, to a high street full of collectables, gifts, and garments.
